First, you need to have a very fit and healthy body because this temple is located around 1,000 meters up the side of Mount Agung. There are 3 main temples in Pura Besakih with each one representing the concept of trinity in Hindu. Pura Penataran Agung which is located in the center is a representation of Shiva the Destroyer. To the right you would see Pura Kiduling Kreteg representing Brahma the Creator and to the left Pura Batu Madeg representing Vishnu the Preserver. Each one of these temples also has different designated colors with white for Pura Penataran Agung, red for Pura Kiduling Kreteg and black for Pura Batu Madeg.
As the main temple, Pura Penataran Agung is the largest and most complex with different areas representing the Hindu’s seven layers of the universe. If you want to visit the highest temple here, closest to the peak of Mount Agung, there is Pura Pangubengan. From the Pura Penataran Agung, you would need around 30 minutes of walking.
Pura Besakih is located in the North West of Bali, and it is very easy to access from many different areas of Bali. If you are having a tour in Bali and want to visit this temple, it is best to rent a car complete with your own driver since there’s no public transportation here.
If you’re heading here from the capital Denpasar, Seminyak, Jimbaran or Kuta, you need to take the Kusamba Bypass that will reach Klungkung. Through Klungkung then you would need to take the right hand turnoff in Menanga to reach Besakih.

To enter the complex, you need to pay IDR 60,000 for adults and IDR 30,000 for children. You can buy your ticket at the ticket counter which is located near the entrance gate. Don’t forget to wear a sarong since this is the holiest place for Balinese Hindus.
The temple is open for tourists from 8 AM to 5 PM. Since this is a famous spot for many tourists both local and international, Pura Besakih is almost always busy with people so if you want to go here with less crowd, it is recommended to go in the early morning or later in the evening.
